Welcome letter

Dear Participants

It is our pleasure to welcome you to Cape Town for the Surgical Update meeting in General Surgery. We are looking forward to a very exciting and productive meeting and I have no doubt that the scientific program will be excellent and you will all enjoy the setting at The DoubleTree by Hilton Hotels, Cape Town at Upper Eastside. I wish to extend a special welcome to all our international guest speakers who are leaders in the field of general surgery

Each year the Division of General Surgery, University of Cape Town hosts a 2 day Surgical Update Conference which attracts general surgeons from both the State and Private Sector all across South Africa. The 2019 conference promises to build on the standard set at our 2018 conference. We will host an “FCS in a Day” Workshop on the 1st of March which is aimed at trainees getting ready to write their final exams this year. We also have 3 breakfast sessions planned on the 2nd and 3rd of March from 07h00 to 08h00 namely; Colonoscopy: How to get to the caecum in a logical manner, Approach to Polypectomy and then 2 FCS OSCE sessions on each day. These breakfast sessions will accommodate a limited number of delegates, so make sure you book your place now.

Without the invaluable support of our local corporate partners, a congress like this would be impossible so a big thanks to them, who continue to support us despite the difficult economic climate.

We have significantly reduced the prices for trainees and students to make it possible for them to attend. We anticipate a full and interactive meeting with delegates from North and South Africa, America and Europe - a truly international and multi-cultural meeting.

The congress will have a lot of exciting opportunities for clinicians to engage with new clinical methods as well as an update and overview of surgical techniques. It will also be a great opportunity for senior registrars preparing for exams to get a great overview over important topics in the field.

It is our wish that all our delegates will have a great time in Cape Town!

Elmi Muller
Head: Division of General Surgery, University of Cape Town and Groote Schuur Hospital
